"Sea Bride" lay dormant for about a year after Part 11. I worked instead on a different comic intended as a newspaper daily, and came back to this story around May of 2005.
This episode was drawn then, in Birmingham, Alabama. Some of the first panels were actually done inside Dave's Pub right up from 5 Points in Southside, where the bartenders still call me "that guy who draws".
For the soldiers' faces on page one I was inspired by a painting I once saw of Christ surrounded by Roman Soldiers. In the painting the soldiers' expressions are studies in corruption, greed, malice...
Not that Nikolaos or Eddi or Augustin is Jesus, because they're not. I just liked the faces.
The marching song was lifted 95% intact from a World War One British marching song.
